Now a sparsely-populated scattered settlement, Sinja marks the location of medieval Semja, the capital of the Tibeto-Indian kingdom of Khasa (Yatse) in what is now western Nepal. The Sinja valley and its various archaeological remains has been submitted for registration with UNESCO.
