  • Harrison's Folly: I am a most curious person and like to find out why a place is called by a particular name. Now Harrison's Folly is well visited but nobody seems to know why it is called so. From some inputs that I recall, the story goes like this: A Britisher called Harrison on horse back sometime in the late 19th century misjudged the lay of the land when he reached a small tableland at Panchgani. The horse duly alerted reared up and went out of control of the rider. Mr Harrison would have been thrown off from the saddle and gone over the precipice. When the horse returned riderless, the search party finally found Harrison in the valley below. His death was due to his own folly and hence the place got named as Harrison's Folly. If there is an authenticated version that differs from mine I would like to hear about it. Till then my story is plausible! Pramod Acharya
  • Folly apparently is a kind of ornamental building - the term is used in England a lot.
