Bretter Promenade

Romania / Sibiu / Unirii Square
promenade, place with historical importance, pedestrian area, invisible

Although the name is no more used today other than elderly locals and those who know the history of the city, it physically exists.
The name comes from a former covered canal that had the course in the immediate vicinity and was covered with massive planks of wood, later covered with concrete, now defunct.
At the end of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century, the promenade was one of the favorite promenades of the locals, especially the bourgeoisie, for seeing and being seen. Along the promenade were the City Park (Stadtpark, now Astra), the Habermann Palace (1876) with the Habermann Café and the Habermann Beer Hall (Habermanns Grand Bierhalle), Europa Hotel (1914, since 1923 Bulevard).
Habermann Palace and Hotel Europa became a single hotel, Bulevard, in 1933 after extensive renovation work (present day Continental Forum).
