Sandbeach Lake

USA / Colorado / Allenspark /

WL 10283 ft

One of the very few lakes with a real sand beach. Located in Rocky Mountain National Park, the sand accumulated when the lake was dammed, then when the dam was removed and the lake was allowed to return to it's natural level, the sand beach occured.

The lake is usually a few degrees above freezing in the summer due to the snow melt off from nearby Mt. Meeker.

The trail to Sand Beach is moderate and can be comfortably hiked in an afternoon. There are limited camping spots available at the lake and no camping is permitted along the trail.

The trail is moderate to difficult. The lake has Greenback Cutts in it. Use midge nymphs (size 20 and smaller) and small olive wooly buggers. Size 6 leader and tippet. Look for Greenback Cutts in the stream closest to the lake. I checked the distance with a satellite nav. unit and it is very close to 4.5 mi. one way. There are several camping sites along the way and one at the lake. There is a group site at the lake too.
