Hyangilam 291 Steps - Hyangilam (hermitage) was founded in 644 CE. Originally known as Wontongam, the name of the hermitage was changed to Geumoam in 950 CE. In 1592, the entire hermitage was burnt to the ground by the Japanese during the Imjin War. In 1715, the hermitage was rebuilt and the hermitage was renamed to Hyangilam, which means “Looking Out at the Sun Hermitage”. There are 291 steps up to the temple, offering a spectacular view of the ocean.
