Hwataedo, or Hwatae Island, has an area of ​​2.17㎢ and a population of 636 (2001). The coastline is 17 km long.

The highest point is the Samgak Mountain at 118m, with large hills except for the plains in the central part of the island with rice fields and farming villages. The coast is mostly rocky. January average temperature is 1 ℃, August average temperature is 25.5 ℃, and annual precipitation is 1,365㎜.

Most of the residents combine agriculture and fishery. The main agricultural products are sweet potatoes and barley, and a small amount of rice, radish, garlic, and soybeans are produced. From the sea comes, octopus, conger eel, and abalone. Aquaculture of Kim and oysters is active.
