Built in 1948 when what is now White Mountain Research Center, Crooked Creek was a joint research venture between the California Institute of Technology and Naval Ordnance Test Station, China Lake. Areas of research included sun spots, high altitude physics, and cosmic radiation. The University of California White Mountain Research Station was established September 1, 1950.
