Christmas Harbour was named after James Cook's boat moored in this cove on Christmas day, 1776, during its third journey through the Pacific Ocean.
It is considered as one of the first designed places of the Kerguelen Archipelago at the end of the 18th century during the first explorations and settlement attempts. During the 19th century, it becomes a renowned mooring place for ships hunting mammals in the Southern Indian Ocean before becoming a scientific geomagnetic station partly, which has never been permanently occupied.
