The Foch Island is the second biggest island of the Kerguelen archipelago, after Grande Terre (around 32 times bigger).
It is located on the north coast of Grande Terre.
Its name has been given by the English expedition from the Challenger, Captain Nare, in 1874.
It is the largest island in the archipelago with no introduced species (no rabbits, cats, mice or rats). Île Foch is then used as a reference as to the original ecosystem of Kerguelen Island. To prevent any accidental introduction of species, access is highly regulated and restricted to scientific missions only.
