The interior of the Cunard Building was designed as a ticketing hall for the Cunard Steamship line with a rich interior that reflected the high-class environment of steamship travel. After ascending up a set of stairs, visitors first encountered a vestibule with a sculpted ceiling by C. Paul Jennewein that was painted with nautical imagery by Ezra Winter. Wrought iron gates with lunette grilles by the noted blacksmith Samuel Yellin provided access to the booking hall which served first and second-class ticket holders (third class tickets were purchased in the basement).
It is a complex, soaring space with travertine walls and floors with a bronze roundel by John Gregory in the center. The Italian Renaissance ceiling frescoes by Winter were modeled after those in the Villa Masama in Rome. In the central octagon are ships of the four great ocean explorers--Leif Ericson, Christopher Columbua, Sebastian Cabot, and Francis Drake. The side niches have murals of Cunard's shipping routes by Barry Faulkner. White travertine counters originally encircled the booking floor but it as removed when the space was converted by Handren Associates for the United States Postal Service in 1974. They remained on site until 2000.
In late 2014 ,Cipriani S.A. re-opened the building's great hall as an event space. A restoration was undertaken by Li/Saltzman Architects. It has been used as a filming location for the USA series "White Collar" and HBO's "Succession".
