The Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian theatre, which was founded in 1883, was designed by Reinhold Schmaeling, Riga City Architect in 1886 and beautifully restored in 2009-10. It is the oldest professional theatre in Latvia and the oldest Russian Drama theatre outside Russia.
The theatre was funded by the Russian Merchants Association 'улей', which explains the beehives in the façade above the second floor windows.
