The Akmens (or stone) Bridge over the Daugava river was built in 1957 to replace the former iron pontoon bridge. Designed by K Jakovļevs, during the Soviet era the bridge was known as Oktobris tilts (in celebration of Lenin's 1917 October Revolution).
