Ludington's first hospital was at Justus and Paulina Stearns' home at 1109 South Washington Avenue. Justus Smith Stearns (born April 10, 1845 in Winchester, Massachusetts – died February 14, 1933 in Ludington), a local businessman and lumberman (who also built the Stearns Hotel in 1901), converted his house into a hospital in late 1906 and opened on October 19, 1907 as Paulina Stearns Hospital. It was named after his wife (born November 24, 1849 in Conneaut, Ohio) who died on May 3, 1904. $1,000 (roughly $30,000 in today's money) were raised to fund that project. The hospital functioned at that location until August 26, 1940 when it was relocated into a new building (construction began on July 6, 1939 and completed on August 21, 1940 [currently Mason County Health Department/Department of Public Health]) across the street (1200 South Washington Avenue [near Pere Marquette Lake]) from it's original location. The house which became a hospital was demolished on November 26, 1940, it became a parking lot for the new Paulina Stearns Hospital.

With the development of new medical technology and equipment, expansion was necessary again in the 1960's. Since there was no room to grow on Washington Avenue, property on East Ludington Avenue (US-10) was purchased for the new hospital. Construction of the new facility began in July 1965 by Grand Rapids-based construction company Barnes Construction Co. On June 25, 1967, a 76-bed facility was opened and it was renamed Memorial Hospital of Mason County. All the patients (22 of them) from the old Paulina Stearns Hospital were transferred to this facility on June 28, 1967. In May 1981, the hospital celebrated its 75th anniversary and changed its name for the third time to Memorial Medical Center (or Memorial Medical Center of West Michigan). Finally on October 1, 2013, Memorial Medical Center was officially renamed to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital after it was being partnered with Spectrum Health in May 2013.

A $14.7 million expansion of the hospital began on June 18, 2012 by Grand Rapids-based architect/engineering company Progressive AE, changes included the hospital's main entrance being moved to face East Ludington Avenue (US-10) rather than being located in the back by the emergency entrance. There is a covered area where visitors and outpatients enter to the left and emergency patients to the right. The new and larger emergency center includes two trauma rooms and over 20 private exam rooms. The surgery area has also been expanded, with an additional operating room (bringing the total to five) and private recovery rooms. Isolation rooms and psychiatric rooms were also added to the hospital as well.

There have been improvements to outpatient areas, such as the laboratory, medical imaging, and cardiopulmonary department. One main corridor for public foot traffic is now in place, reducing the confusion that existed when trying to find certain destinations within the hospital. Perhaps one of the biggest additions is the new helipad, which is located to the east of the hospital. This is critical when patients need to be moved quickly to a larger facility, such as Spectrum Health Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The expansion project was completed in late-August 2013, the size of the hospital was grown to 66,250 sq. ft. and the total number of hospital beds were increased to 87.

On September 28, 2016, Randall L. Kelley became the president of this hospital.
