abandoned / shut down, historical layer / disappeared object, railway terminus
Balloon loop track at the terminus of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Wildwood branch. Unlike a traditional turning wye, a balloon loop had the advantage of turning entire trains (consists) around in one motion. The loop was abandoned sometime in the 1950s after steam locomotives stopped running on the line (the rest of the line was abandoned on September 30, 1958).
