The old Pictish hill-fort at Burghead (An Broch) is much larger than any other of its kind in Scotland, and has been identified as the possible main center of the Pictish kingdom of Fortriu. It has also been proposed as the site of the fortress known to the Romans as Pinnata Castra, but that has also been placed much farther to the south, at Inchtuthil. Much of the hill-fort was obliterated by the development of the Burghead harbor and the area adjacent to it in the early 19th century. Some of the earthworks can still be seen on the northwestern and northern edges of the promontory.
