Chuao (Municipio Santiago Mariño)

Venezuela / Aragua / Maracay / Municipio Santiago Mariño

Chuao was established more than 500 hundred years ago by the Spanish as a cacao plantation. The beach is beautiful, but the center of the town is about four kilometers inland. It was hidden there originally by the Spanish to protect the valuable cacao crop from theives and pirates. The cacao trees grow all along the road under the shade of a canopy of larger trees. When you get to the town there is a large church and plaza with buildings surrounding it in the Spanish style. Often, there are cacao beans drying in the sun of the plaza. There is a small hotel and restaurant where you can eat a meal or stay the night, and if you wander further inland on the road there is a swimming hole, or pozo, complete with rope swings. Chuao is not accessible by road (you must contract with one of the fishermen in Puerto Colombia to get there), so you might be surprised to find that there are old busses providing transportation between the bay and the town. These were brought over on planks suspended between fishermen's boats from Puerto Colombia. It is said that there are a few busses and cars that didn't make it lying under the sea between Puerto Colombia and Chuao. It's a beautiful and mysterious place, and, as in most of Venezuela, the townspeople are kind and friendly.
