The Byzantine fortification of Metabole served as the center of the Malagina (later Melangeia) district. It was built in the 8th century and rebuilt in the 12th. The area was on an important road from Constantinople to the eastern frontier and the plain served as a military mustering-ground. Sections of the medieval fortifications survive especially on the western edge of the hilltop above modern Paşalar. The role of Metabole was subsequently assumed by Akhisar, the modern town of Pamukova.

The ruins were identified with Metabole/Malagina/Melangeia by Clive Foss in 1990 (in Anatolian Studies 40: 161-183), who disproved earlier identifications of the medieval town with sites at Yenişehir or near Mekece, farther to the southwest.
