This mine in the Sŭngho District of Pyongyang most likely produces an anthracite coal. To compensate for the lack of mining technologies (i.e., you can only burrow so far and maintain a sound structure), this mining operation has turned to strip mining. Strips mining basically means that coal is taken from the topside of the mountain. With fewer companies developing technology to mine coal, mining operations have resorted to this environmentally-destructive practice to meet the the intense international demand for coal. Strip mining is practiced in India, China, Pakistan and the United States of America, among many others.
