The clock originally dates back to the late 15th century, when it was incorporated in the façade of the Venetian church of San Ruffillo. It was repositioned on the side of the tower overlooking Piazza del Popolo when the building was remodeled in 1783, and a new clock mechanism and quadrant were commissioned in 1789. The clock tower took its final form when the building was rebuilt in 1925.
