Photo dating from around 1912 shows the Ocean Shore Railroad right of way running along the face of Devils Slide.
Until it was abandoned in 1921, the railroad track on Devils Slide had a disconcerting habit of falling into the sea now and then because the very active San Gregorio strike-slip fault runs right along the shore line.
This fault zone also explains how San Pedro Rock came to be thrust up from the sea bed at such an extreme angle.
