Memorial to Anna Akhmatova (Moscow)

Russia / Moscow / Moscow
 monument, interesting place, 2000_construction

The unimpressive building number 17 is notable for having been the place where the famous poet, Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966), stayed and worked during her lengthy visits to Moscow between 1934 and 1963. The bronze statue of Anna Akhmatova, the work of Vladimir Surovtsev, is based on her friend, Amedeo Modigliani's famous drawing of Akhmatova. The drawings were done during their intense but brief relationship which occurred between 1910 and 1912.

The sculpture was placed here in the courtyard in 2000. The courtyard is usually closed to visitors, but if you ask the security guard it is usually possible to enter without problems.
