During Soviet times, housing often clustered people who worked in the same place or had the same profession. In this particular house there lived many well-known writers: Boris Pasternak, Konstantin Paustovsky, Michael Prishvin, Jury Olesha, Ilf and Petrov, Valentine Kataev, children's writer Agnija Barto, Ilja Erenburg, Margarita Aliger, Roman Sef and others.

This house may also have been the prototype for the House of Light Drama, in which there lived "the critic Latunsky", and in which Margarita (the heroine of the well-known novel of Michael Bulgakov "the Master and Margarita") being transformed into a witch, has arranged a pogrom.
