Second steepest street in the World

Baldwin is incorrectly recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the Steepest street in the world due to a faulty measurement. Baldwin Street has a maximum gradient of 1m in 2.86m (191). This means for every 2.86 metres horizontal it goes up vertically 1 metre The horizontal length of Baldwin street from North Road to the top of the street is 359 metres. The change in height is 69.2 metres.

The % grade is 35%, which is only slightly less than the true steepest street, Canton Ave in Pittsburgh, which has a grade of 37%.

  • Yeah it's a nutter of a hill alright. Part way up it is surfaced in concrete for better grip. Make sure to park your car the right way or have a full tank of petrol. I believe in 2000, some crazy kids rode a wheelie bin down Baldwin Street and didn't make it to the hospital in time. Must be a varsity thing. ;-)
  • მაგარი ქუჩაა :)
  • I am from Dunedin but now live in the USA what I have read the street Canton Ave. in Pittsburgh which is now supposedly the steepest st in the world by2 degrees but is much shorter than Baldwin St in Dunedin NZ so it makes it insignificant.
