The American Airlines Arena was designed by Arquitectonica and Heinlein Schrock Stearns and was constructed from February 1998 until December 1999 at a cost of $213,000,000. Opened December 31, 1999 with a concert by Gloria Estefan. The arena is the home of the Miami Heat of the NBA. The Miami Sol of the WNBA played in this arena from 2000 to 2002. It has an all-seater capacity of 19,600 with 2,105 club seats and 80 luxury boxes. It can also convert into the Waterfront Theater, a configuration which uses between 3,000 and 5,000 of its seats.

The arena hosted the Latin Grammy Awards in 2003 and WWE's Royal Rumble in 2006.
