On April 12, 2017 Ivanhoe announced that the early works construction for shaft 2 would commence in Q2 2017 and would consist of a 29 m deep boxcut, and the foundation for the 103 m tall headgear that will house the hoisting equipment and support the shaft collar. The headgear was designed was designed by South Africa-based Murray & Roberts Cementation and the work is estimated to take approximately 12 months with a cost around R70 million (US$5.5 million).

The shaft has a diameter of 10 m and a depth of 1,,104 m and will be concrete lined. When completed it will serve as the primary production and access shaft, with a hoisting capacity of 6,.4 mt annually utilizing two 40-tonne rock-hoisting skips working in counter balance. It will also serve as ventilation intake for the upper levels of the mine. The shaft is also equipped with a large 225-person, single-deck personnel and materials cage, as well as an auxiliary personnel cage. The main cage will have a maximum payload of 40 t and is designed to be chaired with drive on / drive-off capabilities, and the auxiliary cage has 2 decks with a 20 person 30 t capacity.
