This is the Blinkpan underground operation which is a mechanised bord-and-pillar operation, with coal crushed, screened, washed and transported by rail to Komati power station. Koornfontein is owned by Glencore Xstrata and Optimum Coal also owns an effective 96% interest in Koornfontein Mines in Mpumalanga, which as at 30 June 2009, had a reserve base of 46.5m tons of run-of-mine coal, of which 30.7m tons were classified as saleable. In addition, Koornfontein Mines owns a further 1.58Mt of export entitlement at RBCT, of which 1.50Mt are for its own use.
