Messina Platinum Mine

South Africa / Limpopo / Lebowakgomo /
 mine, platinum mine/processing

This mine/project was originally developed by Southern Era Resources and known as Messian Platinum Mines but it was purchased by Lonmin, renamed, but is now on care and maintenance. During the bidding for the mine there were other companies interested including Impala Platinum but they withdrew (June 2005). Lonmin retrenched some of their operations in 2009 resulting in 1500 layoffs at this mine. On May 19-2011 Lonmin announced a 2 Billion investment in it's South African Mines in which they will “re-examine Limpopo to identify the right time to reactivate our assets" and possibly restart the mine with platinum prices and demand rebounding since the route of 2008.

This mine is on South African Farm: Farm Voorspoed 458 KS.
