Booysendal Platinum Mine

South Africa / Mpumalanga / Lydenburg /
 mine, platinum mine/processing

This is Northam Platinum's second wholly owned and operated mine and has a life of mine of 50+ years and is their replacement for production when Zondereinde which has a life of mine of 18 years (May 2011)is depleted. This mine is unique in that will employ a reverse decline system to move the ore to concentrator which is above the mine. At Booysendal the UG2 orebody outcrops on surface in the side of the valley, with the concentrator plant planned to be located on a plateau some 160 metres above the outcrop position. The transporting of ore from a portal on the valley side would have required a complicated, expensive and environmentally intrusive surface belt array. The adoption of a reverse decline system (the first in the industry) offers a cost-effective and optimal environmental solution reducing the footprint to 19 hectares for the first Booysendal module.

The decline shaft will intersect the belt decline, thereby allowing the direct transport of ore to the concentrator. The decline runs at 25 degrees off the line of dip.

May 2011 Update:

Northam has started bulk earthworks and the establishment of roads and infrastructure for the the first module of the Booysendal project, a UG2 mine on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex, which will produce some 160 000oz (3PGM+Au) at steady state.

The plan is to mine at a rate of 187 000 tonnes per month, and to upgrade this production through a dense media separation (DMS) plant to produce a concentrator feed of 150 000 tonnes per month.

The property covers a substantial undeveloped UG2 reef and Merensky reef mineral resource (103 million ounces of 3PGE+Au), on the eastern limb of South Africa's Bushveld Complex, near the town of Mashishing (formerly Lydenburg), straddling the border of Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. The project area is underlain by both the UG2 and Merensky ore bodies.

The North Shaft complex for the first module will comprise four declines, three on reef and one in the footwall accessed by two reverse declines. Ore will be stockpiled on surface ahead of the commissioning of the smelter in January 2014. The average operating cost for Module 1 is expected to be in the region of R455/tonne milled.

Sale of South Half

South Africa's Northam Platinum said on Wednesday it would sell part of the mineral rights for its Booysendal property to Aquarius Platinum AQP.L for 1.2 billion rand ($180.6 million).

Northam said Aquarius would buy the mineral rights attached to the southern part of Booysendal, which is adjacent to Aquarius' own Everest mine.

"This acquisition is important for Aquarius, as it enables us to significantly extend the mine life and potentially expand the production of one of our important assets," Stuart Murray, Aquarius' Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement.

Northam, one of South Africa's smaller platinum miners, said it would use the money to develop its own Booysendal North mine.

"The amount of 1.2 billion rand, plus cash of 650 million rand from the acquisition of Mvelaphanda Resources Limited, funds on hand and future earnings will contribute significantly to bringing the BYD North UG2 mine into production as expeditiously as possible," it said in a separate statement. The company said the Booysendal mine would come into production by early 2013.
