archeological site, abbey, Roman Catholic church
A ruined ancient Irish monastery in Clones, founded by Saint Tigernach (Tierney) in the 6th century. The town grew up around the abbey, which was raided and destroyed repeatedly during the Middle Ages. After the suppression of the monasteries in the 16th century, the site hosted an English garrison. Remains include the round tower and Saint Tigernach's grave.
