The original building was constructed in 1885 (some claim it's 1890) by newspaper editor Thomas P. McMaster as the McMaster Building, it was renamed to Hamel Building on May 1, 1914 after this property was handed over to A.W. Hamel. That building was destroyed by fire on March 24, 1934 at 3:20am. However, that wasn't the first fire that happened there, the first one was on December 6, 1916 at 12pm at the basement, it even destroyed the newly-opened Lakeside Printing Co.; the second one was on October 4, 1928 at the 2nd floor. That old building used to house a post office (c. 1889-June 30, 1909 [relocated to the Kline Building {became Jebavy Building around mid 1930's, demolished around late 1970's} at 114 E Ludington Ave. on July 1, 1909]), newspaper publisher The Ludington Record-Appeal (c. July 1909 [originally located on the 2nd floor of this building]-c. 1914 [absorbed by the Ludington Daily News {c. late-June 1913}, currently located at 202 N Rath Ave.]), department store Nickels, Mertz Co. (c. 1914-c. Fall 1916), and printing office Lakeside Printing Co. (December 5, 1916-March 24, 1934 [entire building destroyed by fire, relocated temporarily to 216 W Ludington Ave. and then to 420 S James St. on April 3, 1934]); the second half of that building (109½ E Ludington Ave.) used to house a beauty salon LeClair Marinello Shoppe (until March 24, 1934 [entire building destroyed by fire, relocated to the National Bank of Ludington Building {Ste. 15} and reopened on April 23, 1934]); the second floor of that building used to house a photographic studio W.A. Gross (until March 24, 1934 [entire building destroyed by fire but photography practices continued on in his home at 408 N Robert St.]).

The new Hamel Building was rebuilt between mid 1934 until around late-October 1934 by the original owner A.W. Hamel and reopened on December 1, 1934. It is a two-story brick and steel structure, modernized, and fireproof. But this building is shorter than the original one (old Hamel Building was tall as the Busy Big Store building, which is next door west from here). The three business that returned to this rebuilt building were photographic studio W.A. Gross ([2nd floor] reopened October 15, 1934), beauty salon Marinello Shoppe ([2nd floor] reopened October 16, 1934), and printing office Lakeside Printing Co. (reopened December 1, 1934). Lakeside Printing Co. occupied this building until 1937 when it was relocated to 111 N Rath Ave. In that same year, Montgomery Ward (located at the Busy Big Store building) expanded into this building. Second floor businesses Marinello Shoppe relocated to 303 E Ludington Ave. around late 1930's and W.A. Gross left this building around late 1930's. After those two left, an osteopathic physician/surgeon's office Dr. Edward Hensel (late-November 1939-c. mid 1940's), photography studios Betty Truxell (mid 1940's-early-October 1949 [relocated to 301 N Gaylord Ave.]), and Leslie A. Dodd (early-December 1949-c. mid 1950's) occupied the second floor. Today, the second floor is currently empty.

The expanded portion of Montgomery Ward has left this building around 1980. After that store portion left, a gift shop The Mole Hole (May 9, 1981-August 2, 1986), and jewelry store Closson's Jewelry (1987-late 2014) occupied this building. Today, the building is now a clothing store chain, opened on April 30, 2015 at 10am.
