  • Eluvanampatty: Eluvanampatty is my native village situated on the slopes of a hillock known as perumal karadu on the top of which you will find a temple dedicated to perumal the Vishnu. We were told of the ordeal our folks went through in carrying up a stone lamp post which is lit on karthigai days the sight reminding us the boys of a light house. The village is unique by today’s standards as it houses the so called untouchables in the heart of the village, its artery path is itself is a streamlet (odai).I was born in 30s and I am the first graduate that too a mechanical engineering graduate from the village. To my knowledge all the communities had very cordial relationship and communal feud was unheard of. The village square (mandai) houses village deities such as Sowdambiga, kottaisamy Muthalammans Elementary Scholl of 30s and a maravar bhajanai madam. It, is a place for merry making and the cattle’s assembly in the morning before being led for grazing fields is worth the sight. I have roamed around the country and abroad on official assignments for more than three decades, yet my soul lives in that compact village.Eluvanampatty soil carried me as a boy for a decade only, but I carry it in my heart and soul forever. Thanks to the guy who provided this wonderful opportunity to fondly remember our village.
  • . Continuation:The Virumallamman temple was a low roof building with mud compound and its southern compound gave way to shops, one of which housed Kannadikkarar’s grocery shop and I don’t remember to have witnessed much of religious activities then. This is on the southern side of the mandai, separated by a built up street leading to the main street/path/odai.On the contrary, on every Tuesday evening you would hear drumbeats from Sowdambiga kovil announcing puja and at the end of which venpongal Prasad used to be distributed. I now understand that virumallamman temple has been renovated on a grand scale and the clan families wherever they are assemble annually to celebrate. Apart from the maravar bhajanai mandapam, there are two more(one at devanga chettiar’s enclave and the other at goundar’s enclave). There are also private madams(Arasappa thevar madam wherefrom my quest for literature began,Appinaicker madam and a chettiar madm at the northern entrance of the village). The chavadi where village chieftains assembled to settle intra village disputes. The small maidan in front has a fort like gate through which the bulls charge out on mattu pongal day(micro jallikattu)There was one urasukal(rubbing stone)for the the cattle’s to massage themselves in the centre of mandai. One philanthropist by name Utthamaputhran asari planted a kerosene lamp post which was the first street light. The pillayar temple at the north east was also built by an Asariar who bequeathed his thottam nearby for maintaining the temple. We the school boys were asked to bathe the idol on every Friday. The nearby pullianthoppu was a preferred site of panchayat for inter village disputes, as neighbouring r villagers believed that a resolution would invariably emerge. One cannot forget “Chinna kinaru”which was the only source of potable sweet water. The weavers produced branded(Chinnalapatty silk)sarees and marketed by head loads in the southern part of india and also in ceylonand penang.Mostly millets, grains, pulses and ground nuts were grown in the field.Once tobacco was also cultivated. One Mookkaiah thevar was a bull tamer of repute and he acted as a dupe for MGR in one of Devar films. The village cannot forget the elders like Peria naicker, the chieftain of the village and his dynamic brother Chinnakalai naicker a hunter,.The other notable persons were Suruliandy chettiar whose son Sundararajan was the first to enter high school , T.K.Subramanian chettiyar(TKS) also a hunter, whose house was my second home,Ganapahy chettiar,Veerappan chettiar, a money lender and a miras whose son(Thonthi) was my classmate and his grandson an agriculture graduate, P.S.Palanisamy chettiar(PSP) Virumallamman pujar i family,a nationalist, but for whose help I would not have been what I am today. The others include Peria gounder and his brother Kandasamy gounder,Managiri thevar,Vandikkara Raju pillai whose son became a teacher, Mahalinga thevar whose progeny have become IT professionals living in States,Seeni thever and Thanga thever,my father and thaimaama respectively. At nights in the north western side you can see Kodaikanal street lightsThe Thampattam paarai now known as dum dum paarai at the sloping end of ghat road to kodaikanal can be seen in the day time. Though Viralipatty was the parent village,Eluvanampatty remained and remains The jewel in the region. The observations are of a 76 year old man’s nostalgic memories and if any part is objectionable and hurts anybody’ s sentiments, the same may be excused for it may not be intentional. .
  • Great observations my dear father...........
