The San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden (aka Sunken Gardens), located in an abandoned limestone quarry. Around 1917, City Parks Commissioner Ray Lambert made plans to turn the quarry into a sunken garden in the Japanese tea garden style.
During WWII, the garden was renamed "Chinese Tea Garden" due to anti-Japanese sentiment. In 1984, Mayor Henry Cisneros restored the original designation.
During the 1990s the garden fell victim to neglect and vandalism. Restoration efforts, guided by the San Antonio Parks Foundation, started in 2004 with the garden being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The restoration was completed and the garden re-opened 8 March 2008.
