The system Krug consisted of a large number of vertical antennas placed on the circumference a circle. In the middle of the circle there was a building with a similar vertical antenna on the top and filled up with transmitting and receiving electronics.
The main task of this system was to test the parameters of the ionosphere and most likely to determine the best operating frequency for the main over-the-horizon radar.
The frequency with the optimal propagation is dependent on the current condition of the ionosphere which changes within the day and is direction dependent.
