Kavieng


Kavieng is the capital of New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. Population about 11,000. Its economy is largely based on fishing, agriculture, mining, oil palm and touism. A centre for diving, both natural sites, and wrecks from World War II. The city was occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945, and the site of an infamous massacre of prisoners.
