The City of Indianapolis currently has 20 Park Rangers who are responsible for ensuring the Indy Parks' properties are safe for people to visit, and that park amenities and facilities are safeguarded. To this end, these rangers actively patrol the 207 park properties, 65 miles of trails and greenways, 13 golf courses and Eagle Creek Reservoir, in addition to other waterways in Marion County under the jurisdiction of Indy Parks. They enforce local and state laws as well as park policies and procedures. Additionally, they are responsible for security event planning and traffic needs at all events which occur on park properties.

When the building opened in 1941, it was originally home to Indianapolis Fire Department Station 17. The fire station closed February 17, 1984.
