Nalchity Upazila (Jhalokati district) with an area of 237.17 sq km, is bounded by Jhalokati sadar and Barisal sadar upazilas on the north, Bakerganj upazila on the south, Barisal Sadar upazila on the east, Rajapur and Jhalokati Sadar upazilas on the west. Noted rivers: Nalchity, Sugandha, Bishkhali, Khalrabad.

The location of the Nalchity town is 22.6368182N 90.2705464E. Nalchity (Town) consists of 9 wards and 19 mahallas. The area of the town is 24.16 sq km. The town has a population of 38786; male 49.91%, female 50.09%; density of population is 1605 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 52.5%. The town has one dakbungalow.

Nalchity thana was established in 1924 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of one municipality, 9 wards, 10 union parishads, 149 mouzas and 150 villages.

Archaeological heritage and relics: Sujabad Kella (1639)

Historical events: 19 Muslims were killed in an encounter with the British army at Kulkati in a mosque compound in 1927.

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census: Population 203563; male 50.01%, female 49.99%; Muslim 93.68%, Hindu 6.27% and others 0.05%.

Land use: Total cultivable land 15479.56 hectares, fallow land 1092.68 hectares; single crop 12.09%, double crop 77.53% and treble crops 10.38%; cultivable land under irrigation 24.53%.

Land control: Among the peasants, 15.26% are landless, 48.92% small and marginal, 31.62% intermediate and 4.20% are rich.
