The Imperial Quarter (also known as, in Amharic: ፋሲለደስ ግቢ; transliterated as Fasiledes
Gibbi) is a seventeenth century royal enclosure consisting various castles, palaces
and many other historical buildings. Except for a few of the structures that are in ruin,
almost all of the historical buildings are still intact and can be found in the former capital of Ethiopia, Gonder.
Established during the reign of Emperor Fasiledes, often called Fasil (1632-1667),
the oval-shaped enclosure with 12 gates, all of which were given names, was completed
at different times.
The son of Fasiledes, Emperor Yohannes I (1667-1682), built a library and a chancellery.
The son of Yohannes I, Emperor Iyasu I (1682-1706), built the "Saddle-shaped" castle.
Emperor Dawit III (1716-1721), built the large "Hall of Song".
Emperor Bakaffa (1722-1730), built the "V-shaped" reception and banqueting hall.
And Empress Mentewab built two castles.
The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
