The beach has got a history of being one of the famous waterfronts of the west cost of Mathilakam. Prior to the construction of Tippusulthan Road and subsequent westword extension by numerous beach roads, this beach was very well connected by a very wide pathway right from Matilakam to the beach. During Deepavali festival people from very far off places, for instance from across the Canoli canal, which is now connected with Mathilakam bridge, used to come in large numbers for a dip in the holi waters of the sea symbolising the Deepavali snanam. The beach had altogether a festive mood where numerous stalls were erected to sell the merchandises of all varieties. The beach with its white crystalline sugar type sands with a very wide stretch of beach (now mostly inhabited) was most popular for fishing and drying fish by the fishermen. By the passage of time, the beach although shrunk in size, is still popular and tourists from various places come to visit the beach. The attraction of two famous hindu temples, viz. Sri Subramanya Temple and Killikulangara temple and the famous Karukachalil Palli (Mosque) add to the beauty of Koolimuttam.
