Northern Trust (Chicago, Illinois) | bank

USA / Illinois / Chicago / Chicago, Illinois / South LaSalle Street, 50

Northern Trust moved to this site in 1906 from its original home in the Rookery Building across LaSalle Street where it was established in 1889.

The original five-story building was designed to expand upward however it was never completed. City engineers felt the building was so well-constructed and firmly anchored into the bedrock that they adopted it as the level from which all heights in the city would be measured. A plaque mounted on the building's corner at Monroe and LaSalle notes this.

In 1965, a 14-story annex was completed behind the original whose interior was remodeled.
