The gallery is open from 10 am to 7 pm but the ticket office closes one hour earlier. The museum is closed on Mondays and on Thursdays it is open late until 9 p.m.
The exposition opens with examples of Romantic art and the Barbizon school, moves on to Impressionism and closes with a show of avant-garde painting. The art is based on the collections of two late 19th early 20th century Moscow collectors belonging to Sergei Shchukin and Ivan Morozov.
The establishment of this museum is part of an effort to create a "museum town" within Moscow. It is located in a wing of the 17th-19th century Golitsyn estate. In 1994 the Museum of Private Collections first opened at this location. Today it is on the other side of the Pushkin museum at Volkhonka Ul. 10.
