Behind the Kirillov territory rise the two tall slender towers of a large thermal power station that serves the central city district. Power Station "Branch GES-1" was built especially to supply electricity to the Moscow trams, never a popular form of city transportation. In 1904 the construction started on part of the territory of the former wine and salt warehouses. This impressive building housed the power station equipment which was made for the Moscow branch of «the Society of Electric Illumination» and the factory of «Siemens and Galske» in Petersburg. The power station opened on February, 15th, 1907. This industrial building was a project of the architect Vasily N. Bashkirov (1870-?) and is considered an excellent example of industrial architecture of this period.
