chimney, water tower, nuclear research centre
The STANK was a unique combination of steam chimney and water tank (thus STeam-tANK) that was a unique safety feature of the WR-1 reactor. Most nuclear reactors include both an emergency water supply to cool the core in the case of an accident, and a steam chimney that can be used as a last resort to vent the reactor core. The STANK combined these two functions. The STANK originally held its water in a large ball on the top, but this was sold for scrap by the time this image was taken.
