Second World War 1939-1945, place with historical importance
The approximate location of the famous Pointe Du Hoc missing guns. Prior to D-Day, the German 155mm Gun batteries located at Pointe Du Hoc were removed from the Pointe due to the Allied bombing and shelling in the weeks before D-Day. On 6th June 1944 when the men of the 2nd Rangers made it to the top of the cliffs at Pointe Du Hoc, they were very surprised to find their main objective - the 155mm cannons supposedly stationed at the Pointe - to be missing. Later in on the day of 6th of June, however, two patrols of the 2nd Rangers managed to find the 5 of the 6 missing guns (One had been destroyed by bombing before D-Day) and disabled them using thermite grenades, preventing them from firing on Utah beach to the West and completing their objective.
