Home of Erwin "Cannonball" Baker (1882-1960), racer and promoter. He won the very first race ever held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909, but is best known as a record-setting "point-to-point" racer. In 1933 he drove from New York to Los Angeles in 53 hours 30 minutes, a record that stood until 1971 during the "Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash", or "Cannonball Run". Many subsequent races, as well as movies of varying quality, have been made in Baker's honor.
