Operator-Owner : South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. and Santee Cooper Inc. joint venture.

The V.C. Summer Nuclear Station, the company's only nuclear plant, is located approximately 30 miles north of Columbia in Jenkinsville, South Carolina. The single-unit facility generates 966 megawatts of power using a pressurized water reactor. The station is jointly owned by SCE&G and Santee Cooper. SCE&G operates the station.

Construction on the facility began in 1973 and was completed in 1982. The station went into full commercial operation on January 1, 1984. In 2004, SCE&G celebrated 20 years of operations at the plant, along with the approval of license extension through the year 2042. V.C. Summer is a consistent top quartile performer in safety and operating performance. In February 2006, SCE&G and Santee Cooper announced the selection of the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station as the preferred site should they move forward with constructing a new nuclear facility. Work is under way to pursue this option.

VC Summer Nuclear Power Station uses a Westinghouse "light water" reactor. "Light water" means that the nuclear reaction is moderated by regular H2O (as opposed to "heavy water" which uses a heavier Hydrogen isotope called "deuterium").
