The citadel (akropolis) of ancient and medieval was located on a hill on the edge of the cities fortified area, and enclosed a relatively small space, including the later site of the Orhan mosque. The outline is based on the maps and plans provided by Clive Foss, Survey of Medieval Castles of Anatolia II: Nicomedia, The British Institute of Archaeology at Ankara, Monograph no. 21, 1996.
