Horse Chestnut Tree

Canada / Alberta / Edmonton /
curiosity, tree, place with historical importance

This tree was in the back yard of the original house that was on this site. British people have tried for over a century to get horse chestnut trees to grow in Edmonton, not impossible but difficult, they can be damaged in winter. This one is of a hardier variety imported from Ukraine, and is doing well. It has now seeded many other trees in Edmonton. There have been preservation efforts to ensure that it remains healthy in the middle of the parking lot.

Comments

  • I saw this tree in 1994; it looked great and had bloomed profusely earlier in the year. A fine old house was still standing on the property and there was a second, somewhat stunted Horse Chestnut near the street. -Tony
  • I'm going to go look at this tree tomorrow.
  • Its fall and we visited the beautiful tree today. Now surrounded by tall buildings and parking, it stands tall and strong and is filled with spiky covered chestnuts. The leaves are turning yellow.
  • The photo I added as a guest was taken on 2014-06-15 in early afternoon.
