Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / New York City, New York / South Street, 4
 ferry terminal, historic remains

Designed by Schwartz Architects with Ron Evitts and TAMS and completed in 2002 to replace the old 1909 terminal, the Staten Island Ferry provides 20 million riders a year with ferry service between St. George on Staten Island and Whitehall Street in lower Manhattan. Most are commuting to work, but the five-mile, 25-minute ride also provides a majestic view of New York Harbor (including a wonderful look at the Statue of Liberty) and a no-hassle, even romantic, boat ride. On a steamy mid-summer evening the ferry ride can be as refreshing as any sea cruise. Best of all, the fare--once fifty cents--was eliminated in 1997. Cars, which the ferries once carried for $3, have been banned since the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001. It was completely renovated and rededicated in February 2005 as a major integrated transportation hub for the ferry, buses, subways, taxis, and bicycle lanes. The terminal includes a 2-acre plaza named after Peter Minuit. The building is clad in silver metal panels and green-tinted glass. There is a section of the Battery Wall that is also displayed at the foot of the escalator in the main entry point for the South Ferry Station, right outside the ferry terminal.

If there was one thing I would recommend to anyone visiting NYC for a short time I would recommend taking the Staten Island ferry. Its free, its a relaxing and has an amazing view of the skyline. I would bring a coat because it cane become chilly but still very nice!
