The Simon Lake was the namesake ship of her class of Submarine Tenders, a modified version of the preceding Hunley Class. She commissioned in 1964 and served briefly out of Charleston before she was forward deployed to Holy Loch, Scotland. She served out her career attending to the submarine fleet tracking down Soviet Subs in the North Atlantic before she decommissioned in 1999.

Layberthed at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard As a member of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet until December of 2015, the Simon Lake was stricken from the US Navy Register and placed under the control of the US Maritime Administration (MARAD). Relocated to the James River Reserve Fleet shortly thereafter, she was stripped of reusable materials and subsequently sold for scrapping. The ship departed under tow of the commercial tug Rhea in early February 2019 and arrived at Brownsville for scrapping shortly thereafter.
