Remains of an Augustinian house founded in 1119 by an ancestor of Robert the Bruce. Little other than the groundplan/foundations remain, though the gable of the east end of the church still stands and is a striking and photogenic fragment.

The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII and his henchmen, but briefly refounded during the 'pigrimage of grace' -- a rebellion in the north of England against Henry's break with the Catholic Church. It may have been this rebellious act that ensured such a total ruination of the abbey buildings.

Currently in the care of English Heritage and open to the public.
